Breast implant removal

There are two possible routes for removing your existing breast implants:

Breast implant removal without having anything else put in the original. Breast implant removal with new implants, which takes place simultaneously.

Both procedures can be carried out at our clinic in Harrogate as part of our experienced team of breast and body surgeons. Ultimately the choice is influenced by whether your capsules and skin underneath the breasts are damaged and what you would ideally like your breasts to look like after the procedure. A consultation with one of our surgeons will help you decide which option best suits you.

✦ Overview

Understanding your options

  • Breast implant removal only
If you opt for your breast implant removal with no replacement, your procedure will be priced at £7,650. You may have chosen to have your breasts implanted removed due to several reasons such as capsular contracture or ruptured implants or you simply wish to remove your implant from your body based upon symptoms that you associate with ‘Breast Implant Illness’.
  • Breast implant removal and exchange
This is where your implants come out to be replaced n=by new ones and its priced at £7900. You opt for this method only when you are looking for a fresh implant rather than having none as way of still keeping the shape the implant given but with just a new one.
  • En bloc capsulectomy
When having your breast implants replaced, you will have both the old implant(s) and new implant(s) inserted in the same surgery. The cost is £7900. You may prefer to have your breast implants replaced if you wish to maintain the shape provided by an implant but prefer the look/feel of a newer style of implant.
arm lift surgery

What you'll look like without a lift?

The question that is asked most commonly to our surgeons. As a result of the implant being removed, the results of how the breast is shaped up varies from person to person. For some the removal causes a natural shape to settle in but for others this might at times turn into loose skin wherein the need for a breast uplift becomes a necessity.

Factors like skin elasticity, implant size and the number of years its been in your body plays quite an important role in the decision for removal. For someone who has had them at a younger age with smaller implants, over the course of years it tends to become tighter compared to someone who has had larger implants for a decade or more. That doesn’t mean that the surgery was done wrong, it’s just that the tissue had to acclimatize itself to the new change.

Our surgeons at Kliniken always check the skin and tissues at consultation before they recommend the best procedure for you, i.e., breast implant removal with or without lift. This is the before and after no lift question we get asked the most in the consultation.

Why patients choose breast implant removal?

A lot of people are usually aware of why they are here.

  • Some are facing known issues with implants like capsular contracture or maybe even suspect a ruptured implant.
  • In quite a number of cases for people who have had implants for a long part of their life, they just want to have the feel of a body without it.
  • But in most cases lately, we have seen people coming with symptoms like brain fog, fatigue and joint pain, which usually is caused by a phenomenon called Breast Implant Illness. This is a new wave of symptoms that have gained popular terminology as BII, but still is to be recognized by the MHRA, FDA or UK bodies even now, although there are patients seeking for breast implant removal with a well documented number of growing cases.

Our surgeons at Kliniken will ask you about these symptoms to gain some history at consultation regarding your implants so that they can be honest about what the removal would likely change for you.

✦ How is breast implant removal done

The procedure

  1. At our centre in Harrogate, we conduct explant surgery under general anaesthesia.
  2. Our surgeons will first make an incision, usually along the scar from your original surgery and then remove the implant. In certain cases the capsule needs to be removed too. This is called capsulectomy. Where both the capsule and the implants are removed it’s called en bloc removal.
  3. Our surgeons in your consultation will decide what procedure applies the best for your case and if there’s a need for a lift the new implant goes in only after which the capsule work is done.
✦ Why do i need get my implant removed

Rupture and capsular contracture

One thing you need to know is that implants don’t last forever.

A ruptured implant or a capsular contracture are the reasons that most patients opt for breast implant removal. Silicone rupture usually go unnoticed for years and are always a discovery of a test intended to be done for something else.

If this is the concern you have, our surgeons will talk you through how frequently the imaging options for reviewing your implants need to be done.

On the other hand capsular contracture usually symptomizes as firmness, discomfort or change in shape owing to the tissues tightening around the implants. The extent of it again, depends from person to person and our surgeons are well aware of assessing your condition during the consultation.

✦ What will my recovery after breast implant remove feel like

Recovery is much easier than you think

Recovery after breast implant removal is much easier on you than with an implant done. You are back home the same day. But over the coming few days, you will experience swelling and some discomfort which tends to fade out slowly as you get back to normal life with light activity.

Anything with gym or workout or strenuous activities will need some time before they become comfortable again. Your healing is monitored by our surgeons here and they will advise you on every follow up appointment on what you can start with.

✦ Frequently asked questions

FAQs on breast implant removal in Harrogate

Most patients describe the first few days as uncomfortable rather than severely painful & pain relief manages this well. Discomfort settles noticeably within the first one to two weeks.

For many patients, yes it does. It depends on skin elasticity, implant size & how long you've had your implants in. Our surgeon assesses this honestly at your consultation & advises if a lift would give you a better result.

NHS funding for breast implant removal is limited to cases with a specific medical need such as a confirmed rupture or illness caused by the implant itself. Cosmetic preference alone does not qualify. Your GP advises on whether you meet NHS criteria.

Many patients report improvement in symptoms after breast implant removal, though this isn't a guaranteed or clinically confirmed outcome & BII itself isn't currently a recognised diagnosis. Our surgeon discusses your individual symptoms & is honest with you about what to expect from this.

Sometimes, depending on your provider, policy & the medical reason behind your removal. BUPA, AXA, Aviva & WPA are among the insurers patients most commonly check with.
